I've been doing cakes for about 3 or 4 years now (time flies when you're having fun), and teaching cake decorating for about 2 years, so it would make sense that I like to eat cake...but that has never been the case! Even as a kid I could take it or leave it, and usually scraped off the frosting...go figure.
People always ask what kind of cake I like and which frosting is my favorite, but to be honest, I rarely eat my cake, sometimes I'll do a taste-test, but usually Nick is around for that, so I've been able to make it through these years cake-free. Nick used to love cake, but even his sweet tooth has been pacified with the tons of cake and frosting that have come through our kitchen these past few years. Sorry babe!
So while the Havens' don't eat cake anymore, everyone else does...so that's why I do cake. Everyone else likes cake and it's a special thing, you don't just sit around eating cake everyday...it's usually for a special occasion or celebration. I received this photo from a friend (who we gave some green cupcakes the night before) and this photo is why I do cake....just look at her! What could be cuter than this?

Baby Shower Tea Party
What a great idea it was to do a baby shower tea party for the new little one on the way. Who doesn't want to break out a cute dress, don a festive hat and maybe even a pair of gloves to enjoy an afternoon of tea and scones? Little did we know it would snow 6 inches the day before and temperatures would hit bout 40 degrees for the party on Sunday...Friday it was 75! I made this cake to match the tea bag favors (on top of cake in a tea cup). One note, while fondant likes to stick to itself when it's fresh and in the warmth of your home, when you take it outside to freezing temperatures, not only does it help the detail items to stiffen, it also makes them want to pop off! So bring extra gum glue or extract with you to re-apply once your cake has been through the freezer (also known as outside in March, in Missouri). But it turned out okay, and no one knew what was missing except for me! Hopefully baby Stull liked his cake!
Found a cute idea on Cake Central for a bridal shower cake. It was fun to add letters from the Cricut since it's so much easier that cutting the fondant! Can't wait to find out how to use the Cricut on fondant in a few weeks! I just wish I could get the photo to flip....it's saved landscape style, doesn't want to cooperate!Christmas Cake
So after weeks of making hundreds of cakes at a friend's bakery during their "busy season" my husband informs me that all the nurses at his office asked for for Christmas as a cake. Not sure if it was a hint that I was ignoring him and his cake needs in my desire to not have cake at home after hours with frosting up to my elbows each day....or if they really like the cake that much! But this is what we did, hopefully they liked it (there was a second layer as well...no sense being stingy on cake!).
Party Cake!
What do you bring to a fun party filled with screaming pre-teen girls, vampires and love stories? 50 lbs of cake of course! Some girlfriends and I put this huge thing together for a party in honor of the fall release of the newest teen-heartthrob movie. We copied the cake that was in the movie and it needed to feed the 100-150 other guests, so 50 lbs of cake it was! Sadly, we barely even finished the bottom layer (2-3x16" cakes)!
